Island Air (IATA: WP, ICAO: MKU) was a Hawaiian commuter airline that connected the islands of Hawaii with frequent, short-haul flights. Founded in 1980 and based in Honolulu, Island Air grew to become a regional carrier serving the inter-island travel market for nearly four decades.
The airline operated from two primary hubs: Honolulu International Airport and Kahului Airport on Maui. This dual-hub strategy allowed Island Air to reach multiple destinations across the Hawaiian archipelago, serving passengers traveling between islands for business, leisure, and local commuting. The airline held a partnership with United Airlines, integrating its services into the broader United network and offering connectivity for passengers on longer routes.
Island Air's fleet consisted of De Havilland Canada Dash 8 turboprop aircraft, later supplemented by Bombardier Q400 NextGen turboprops. These twin-engine aircraft were well-suited to the short distances and frequent schedules characteristic of inter-island operations, balancing capacity with operational efficiency on regional routes. Island Air ceased operations on November 11, 2017.
